Join now >The Falcons waived Danny Etling.
Atlanta is heading into its bye week, and Matt Ryan is fully expected to be ready to return from his ankle injury after missing one game, so Etling will now hit waivers. If Etling goes unclaimed, he’ll likely return to the Falcons practice squad.

Matt Ryan (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 8.
This is a bit of a surprise after Ryan was able to get on the practice field yesterday, but his ankle injury from last Sunday did have him limping pretty badly and is obviously relatively serious. Matty Ice has not missed a game in nearly a decade (December 2009), and his absence is a huge loss for a 1-6 Falcons team that can probably only lose one more game to even have a remote chance at the postseason this season. Julio Jones is still a strong WR1 option with Matt Schaub under center, but Calvin Ridley should now be considered more of a FLEX option than a WR2 for Week 8. The Falcons have a bye next week, so hopefully Ryan is back for Week 10 against the Saints.

Derrius Guice (knee) is practicing.
Guice is expected to return off injured reserve when he’s first eligible in Week 11, and he’ll have the next three weeks to practice with the team without being activated to the active roster. The 2018 second-round pick is worth adding and stashing as a potential difference-maker down the stretch in a run-heavy offense.

Matt LaCosse (knee) has been ruled out for Week 8.
New England has veteran Benjamin Watson back as the starter, so LaCosse will probably see action as the No. 2 tight end when he returns.

Cam Newton (foot) will not start in Week 9.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera says Newton is still in middle of rehab, so it’ll be Kyle Allen making his sixth consecutive start for Carolina. It’ll be interesting to see how Allen responds to his first career loss as a starter, but he’s facing another tough defense in the Titans. Newton is not going to be considered to potentially take the starting quarterback job back until he is 100% healthy.

Drew Brees (right thumb) is starting tomorrow, according to ESPN.
Brees is officially listed as questionable for tomorrow’s Week 8 matchup against the Cardinals, but the future Hall of Fame quarterback will be under center after missing the last five games with his right thumb injury. If Brees is somehow available in your league, he’s an immediate QB1 option tomorrow and moving forward. Teddy Bridgewater did an awesome job filling in for Brees, going 5-0 while operating the New Orleans offense at a high level while keeping the Saints in first place in the NFC South for Brees’ return.

Joe Flacco (neck) will miss Week 9.
Flacco played through the injury after going down on Sunday, but he’ll now miss at least one game and reportedly could miss “significant time.” Plus, with Drew Lock soon eligible to return from injured reserve and the Broncos at 2-6, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Flacco is essentially done in Denver, especially after he publicly expressed frustration with some decisions made by the team after their Week 8 loss. Current backup Brandon Allen won’t be a recommended play against the Browns, and this news is a drain on Courtland Sutton’s stock.
