Chris Thompson is signing with the 49ers.

San Francisco is very deep at receiver, so Thompson will need to quickly impress to have a shot at making the team. The 25-year-old made his biggest impact as a returner when he was with the Texans a couple seasons ago.

The Patriots are acquiring Eric Saubert from the Falcons, according to Mike Reiss.

Atlanta will get a conditional seventh-round pick in return for the third-year tight end. Saubert only has five receptions for 48 yards so far in his career, but anyone on the Patriots is automatically on the fantasy radar. Perhaps the 25-year-old will make an impact in September while Benjamin Watson serves a four-game suspension.

The Saints are releasing Rob Kelley.

Kelley was just recently brought in by New Orleans, but they are letting him go to make room for Jacquizz Rodgers. The former Redskins starter has rushed for just 3.1 yards per carry over the past two years after an impressive rookie reason.

Pete Carroll again talks up Chris Carson.

On SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Seahawks head coach was asked about the receiving skills of Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny despite the two not catching many passes last year, and Carroll said they both have really good hands but that Carson might have the best hands on the team. This is the second time in recent weeks that Carroll has raved about his starting running back’s catching ability, and he added this time that Carson “will catch the ball more this year, for sure.” Carroll says Seattle didn’t want to put too much on Carson’s plate last season as a first-year starter, but that the third-year runner will play more on third downs this year and worked all offseason to become a more well-rounded player. Despite the presence of Penny (a first-round pick last year), Carson is locked in as the clear starter for the Seahawks and is likely severely undervalued in PPR scoring formats.

The Saints are signing Jacquizz Rodgers.

New Orleans recently signed Robert Kelley, but he’s being released in a corresponding move. The team probably feels they are more in need of another receiving back in camp, so we’ll see if Rodgers is able to stick around with a strong preseason.

Darren Waller has an AC joint sprain, according to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Gehlken says the injury Waller suffered “is not expected to sideline him for a prolonged period,” adding that the Raiders’ starting tight end “should resume seeing [snaps] soon.” AC joint sprains can take weeks to heal, but they’re typically an injury players can play through at less than 100% after missing little time. Waller isn’t likely to play in the team’s first preseason game next week, but expect him to not miss much time with the injury. As Gehlken notes, it’s important for Waller—a converted wide receiver—to get snaps at tight end as the team’s projected starter at the position.

The Niners cut Niles Paul.

Paul was recently signed to provide depth behind George Kittle, but we’ll see if he can get another chance elsewhere this month. The veteran will turn 30 in a week.
