We’re into the top three of our 2019 Heisman Trophy candidate countdown. Here are the top candidates to this point:
#15: Michigan QB Shea Patterson
#12: Ohio State QB Justin Fields
#10: Ohio State RB J.K. Dobbins
#7: Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez
Tua Tagovailoa was a Heisman frontrunner for much of last season, ultimately finishing as the runner-up to Kyler Murray. Tua will likely be in the top five again in 2019.
Why he can win it
If not for Murray’s sensational season and strong finish last year, Tua would be the reigning Heisman winner with a realistic chance to become the second-ever two-time winner; however, not winning last year could make it more likely that he gets love from the voters this season. Tagovailoa had 48 total touchdowns (43 passing) in 2018, and many of his weapons return, including Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, Devonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle. He’s a humble player with another year of experience under his belt. Alabama will almost certainly be ranked near the top of the college football rankings throughout the entire season, and they’ll be in the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff mix.
Why he won’t win it
It’s not easy to put back-to-back Heisman caliber seasons together. Alabama could potentially not air the ball out as much, or pull Tagovailoa early in blowouts, in an effort to keep him healthy for late in the season.
What must happen
Tagovailoa must remain on the field and record the same type of numbers as last season while again leading Alabama to a Playoff appearance.
